·         Using an ion exchanger / ion exchanging resin.

 

·          .The resin replaces the "hardness ions" with Sodium ions from the refresh solution

 

Refresh solution: Sodium Chloride = table salt.

 As opposed the Calcium and Magnesium ions, the Sodium ions do not create solutions that are difficult to dissolve in water but only soluble compounds (like table salt where the Sodium ions attach to chlorine ions).

 

·         In the salt softener - the softening action induces an increase of Sodium ions in the water.

 

·         In addition, the refresh action is performed by streaming concentrated brine through the resin, which mostly passes through the system and out to the sewage system or into the ground, thereby causing environmental damage.

 

·       Alternatively, the refresh brine must be collected and evacuated by land transmission into the sea.

 

In order to save in the evacuated salt quantities, the two softening methods may be combined, for example:

 

Using the green softener first in order to extract most of the hardness ions and only then polish the result with fine softening using the salt softener.
